Revisiting the Magic of Barnbougle

From the moment you turn down the entrance at Barnbougle and spot the sprawling sand dunes of the 10th of the Dunes course, all of life’s worries are swept away and you’re overcome with a sense of a ‘kid in a candy store’ feeling. As a first-time visitor to Barnbougle in Tasmania, your experience would likely be one of awe and excitement, especially if you’re a golf fanatic. Barnbougle boasts three remarkable golf courses: The Dunes, Lost Farm, and Bougle Run, each offering unique challenges and breathtaking views.

The Dunes Course was designed by U.S Golf visionary Tom Doak and Australian Mike Clayton, opened in December 2004 and is currently ranked 26th in the world top 100. Lost Farm was designed by company Coore & Crenshaw, opened in early December 2010 and is currently ranked 90th in the world Top 100 Rankings. The short course Bougle Run was also designed Bill Coore, Bougle Run’s 14 holes consist of 12 par-3’s and two par 4’s which sit on the tall, undulating coastal dunes between Lost Farm’s front and back 9.

The Golf Courses

The Dunes Course is Barnbougle’s original course and is renowned worldwide. Designed by Tom Doak and Australian Mike Clayton, it’s a true links course, offering a classic golfing experience with a modern twist. The course is set against the dramatic backdrop of Tasmania’s northeast coast, blending naturally with the landscape.

Lost Farm on the other hand, presents a different challenge. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it’s known for its dramatic topography and varied hole orientations that work well with the coastal wind. Lost Farm is not just about golf; it’s about experiencing the transition from rugged coast to farmland, offering a style of course unique to remote landscapes. Interestingly, Lost Farm has 20 holes instead of the usual 18, adding to its uniqueness.

Bougle Run, also designed by Coore and Crenshaw, is the newest addition. A 14-hole short course set atop the dramatic sand dunes. It’s a mix of 12 par-3s and two par-4s, offering stunning views from some of the highest points of the complex, and complementing the two main courses perfectly. Bougle Run is the perfect course for a late afternoon round with your mates, or an early morning round to finish off your trip before catching your flight home.

The on-site accommodation at Barnbougle is designed to enhance your golfing experience. With spacious rooms offering both spectacular course or ocean views and with comfortable amenities, the Dunes and Lost Farm options blend into the property perfectly.

Dining at Barnbougle is another highlight, with a variety of options available. The Lost Farm Restaurant and The Dunes Clubhouse are noted for their delightful menus, featuring locally-sourced ingredients and offering stunning views of the courses and coastline. And the Sports Bar is a perfect place to swap stories post round and relive the highlights of the day’s play.
