Elements of these templates and the holes that inspired them can be found in the design at Lonsdale including – the Alps, Biarritz, Plateau, Eden, Leven, Punchbowl, Thumbprint, Redan and Road.
The course is accompanied by a state-of-the-art Clubhouse, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture. Positioned on the crest of a hill, the building can be experienced from various sightlines, emerging above the trees as golfers navigate the course.

MELBOURNE
Melbourne is one of the most popular and diverse holiday destinations in Australia, with endless activities, attractions, and sights. It’s also a foodies delight, with a wide variety of cuisines and fine dining.

In every corner of Melbourne, you will discover a new and unique golfing experience. You can’t go wrong with a Melbourne Golf Tour, it truly is a golfer’s haven!
Our recommended Melbourne golf courses;
Woodlands Golf Club
Golfers will remember Woodlands because it tests all aspects of their shot-making ability. The greens are small, hard and very fast, the narrow fairways are all pure couch and offer a great surface from which to play and there are many bunkers to overcome, particularly the long bunker shots to pins which always seem to close to the bunker edge.
It provides that overwhelming feeling that you have to work the ball around the course, and never, ever slog it. It is in fact, the most underrated golf course in Melbourne and only now are golfers becoming aware of the challenges it offers.
Woodlands is a course of two parts. The first four holes require the exact placement of tee shots and a delicate pitch shot to ensure a par. It has been said that one must be at least a couple under after four holes if one is to score well around Woodlands since most of the following holes provide formidable challenges to a golfer seeking a par round.

Eynesbury Golf Club
All of the holes at Eynesbury have been strategically designed to allow for the greatest variance of prevailing weather conditions and to accommodate the widest range of golfing abilities.
The fairways are generous and inviting targets however positional play from the tees will always be handsomely rewarded by providing the best angle of attack to the greens.
In most instances, the approaches to the greens are receptive to a ball being played low to the ground and for the creative shot maker, this will prove to be a bonus when the wind is whipping across the open farmlands.
The open creeks traversing a number of the holes and the water bodies on the 10th, 14th, and 18th bring the risk-reward factor aspect of the game to the forefront but always allow for alternative options if the player should feel inclined to take a safer way to the target.

Royal Melbourne Golf Club
West – Much has been written on the qualities of the West Course but put simply it’s a combination of great design and construction. It is full of dramatic undulation, fertile sandy soil and a natural rugged appearance.
West Course highlights include bold bunkering while the rough areas around the tees and bunkers are a mix of native grasses which naturally frame each hole, providing great definition and contrast.
The greens are brilliant and for decades have consistently provided the finest putting surfaces in Australia. They are large and beautifully contoured and are built to accommodate approaches from a number of angles with each progressively more difficult the further the tee shot strays from the perfect line.
East – The East Course starts and finishes on the main site and is highlighted by seven ‘home paddock’ holes. The bunkering is superb while the greens, though smaller than the West’s, are beautifully constructed and sloped.
It incorporates some of the most dramatic undulations on the course, the short four, long four, and mid four starts are brilliant with clear risk and reward options from the tee and birdie to double bogey possibilities.
The closing stretch starts with the short par 4 15th and the heavily bunkered 16th, which is the flattest ‘home paddock’ hole of either course but one of the best and most underrated par 3s in Melbourne. The final two holes are famously used on the world-renowned Composite Course.

The course is currently ranked number 20 in the world and is regarded by many, including some of the world’s best golfers as one of Australia’s finest golf courses.
Kingston Heath is one of the smallest courses of world renown. The difficulty of the course is centred around its bunkering, which is visually stunning. It is full of all the strategic interests golfers expect of a fine course.
A long course at over 6800 yards, it is now on the short side of what is regarded as championship length but its genius is that it can still defend itself against the finest players. More importantly, it is a course to constantly stimulate and challenge those who play it with regularity.

Longer, flatter and more open than The North, with stunning views across its fairways, the South Course is characterised by its creek lines and dry stone walls. Bunkering and green design put a premium on positioning from the tee. A true test of strategic golf.

Victoria Golf Club
The Victoria Golf Club gave architect Alister MacKenzie the perfect opportunity to create the finishing touches to a course of outstanding quality. The greatest players in the game have always been attracted to the famed Sandbelt layout to test their skills across a palate of indigenous rolling topography.
Since the early founders, the course and its members have weaved a rich tapestry of history. The history and feel of Victoria Golf Club is unique and needs to be experienced to be understood.
The Victoria Golf Club Life Member and five-time British Open Champion Peter Thomson said, “some clubs have a special character that sets them apart. It is not necessarily the quality of the course or the accommodations of the buildings that distinguish them. It is more essentially the membership, past, and present, and the file of achievements over such a period of decades that creates such a tradition. Victoria Golf Club is such a club”.

Commonwealth Golf Club
Commonwealth Golf Club is one of the eight clubs that form the famous Melbourne Sandbelt and is a superb test of golf for all standards.
The club has hosted several major events, most notably in recent times, the 2010 and 2011 Women’s Australian Open.
Commonwealth is revered for its challenging driving holes and subtle sloping greens which call for accurate shot-making when playing from the fairway. The trees that line Commonwealth’s fairways have long been considered amongst the finest stands in golf in this country. Credit for their selection, planting and tender care in the club’s formative years is due in a large part to long-term Captain and past Life Member Alex Brahe. Today, an extensive tree management programme continues.

Yarra Yarra Golf Club
The architect of this renowned Sandbelt course was Alex Russell who in 1926 formed a partnership with the famed Dr Alister MacKenzie during his visit to Australia. Today, the course remains substantially the same as the original layout and like all great golf courses, has stood the test of time.
The superb greens and bunkers are the highlight at Yarra Yarra and as good as many of Mackenzie’s own creations. Typically large, fast and undulating, the greens feature some of the most extreme slopes in Melbourne, while the bunkers are constructed to blend naturally with their surrounds and are intrinsic to the strategy of each hole.
The course has been the scene of many major tournaments in its history, leading to worldwide recognition by amateurs and professionals alike.
